What Is Video Metadata Wiper?

A Video Metadata Wiper is a browser-native privacy tool that scans the binary structure of video files to identify and sanitize embedded user metadata, device identifiers, and location tracking details without re-encoding the video stream.

About This Tool

What metadata is hiding inside your video files?

Every time you hit record on your phone, drone, or camera, the device writes a hidden database of technical parameters directly into the video file. This tracking database is called metadata. It records the exact GPS coordinates of where you stood, the camera model, unique serial numbers, creation timestamps, and details about the software used to compress the clip.

When you upload a video to online platforms, forums, or send it directly to clients, you are unknowingly sharing this private digital diary.

Why this tool is different: No video re-encoding

Most online video tools require you to upload your files to their servers where they run slow transcode operations that compress and degrade your video quality. We believe this is a massive privacy risk and a waste of bandwidth.

Our tool works 100% locally in your browser. It uses advanced binary streaming to parse the video's atom structure, locate the metadata container blocks, and replace them with free space padding. 0% quality loss: We do not touch a single pixel of your media data. Near-instant processing: Scrubbing is completed in milliseconds. * Zero uploads: Your videos never leave your computer or phone.

QuickTime atoms: The building blocks of video files

To understand how this tool strips data, it helps to understand how video containers (like MP4 and MOV) work. These files are built from structured blocks called atoms or boxes. The ftyp atom: Tells media players the file type and compatibility profiles. The moov atom: The movie header. This box is the brain of the video, indexing the positions of every frame. The mdat atom: The media data. This is where the actual compressed audio and video frames are stored. The udta and meta atoms: Nested inside the moov block, these store user metadata, copyright text, encoder settings, and GPS coordinates.

How our binary scrubber preserves original video quality

Instead of performing a heavy transcode (which decodes and re-compresses the video frames), our tool performs a surgical, lossless binary rewrite.

If we were to shrink the moov block size, we would shift all the sample offsets stored inside the trak tables (the stco and co64 boxes), corrupting the video. To prevent this, our engine replaces the sensitive metadata atoms with standard free space padding (free atoms).

To media players, the video looks completely identical, but the private metadata is replaced with meaningless zeroed bytes.

Best practices before sharing your videos online

  • Sanitize drone footage: Drones record detailed GPS telemetry tables. Strip them before posting to avoid exposing your launch locations.
  • Clean listing videos: If you are a realtor or seller, scrub your house tour videos before uploading them to classified sites.
  • Use for investigative journalism: Protect sources and whistleblowers by wiping camera model signatures and creation times.

Quick Summary

Perform 100% browser-based inspection and sanitization of MP4 and MOV video containers (ISO Base Media File Format). Uses a Web Worker to parse atoms recursively. Preserves the mdat (media data) box offset while targeting moov, udta, meta, and XMP blocks. Wipes creation timestamps, camera model info, and flight log telemetry by overwriting them with free atoms or zero-filled padding to preserve sample chunk offset stco/co64 integrity. Includes JSON report exports and interactive box tree visualization.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about video metadata wiper.

How do I remove metadata from an MP4 locally?

Drag and drop your MP4 or MOV file into our Video Metadata Wiper. Select 'Scrub Everything' and click 'Wipe Video Metadata'. The tool parses the file's binary container headers and wipes location and camera info entirely in your browser tab, letting you download a sanitized copy instantly.

Are my videos uploaded to any server?

No. Your videos are processed strictly in your local browser memory using modern web APIs. No server uploads or network operations are involved, making it offline-capable.

Does metadata scrubbing reduce video quality?

No. Since we do not transcode or re-encode the audio/video frames, there is absolutely zero quality loss. The file sizes remain visually and dynamically identical.

Does this tool remove GPS coordinates?

Yes. The wiper targets user data blocks (udta), metadata blocks (meta), and custom tracking atoms containing location coordinates and removes them.

How large a file can I process?

The tool utilizes streaming Blob slicing to read box headers without loading the video frames into memory. This makes it safe to parse files up to 2GB on modern devices.

What is a moov atom in MP4?

The moov atom acts as the table of contents for an MP4 file. It maps sample locations, frame offsets, audio synchronization points, and stores timestamps and tags.

Why do smartphones embed location tags in videos?

Smartphones use GPS metadata by default to group videos by location in your gallery. However, this location tag remains active when you share the file.

Can metadata identify my camera?

Yes. Metadata can store camera manufacturers, smartphone models, editing software tags, and even the camera sensor's unique serial number.
